🤝 I am pleased to host a talk with two distinguished speakers at Toong: Markus Klemmer, co-founder and CEO of Planetzero.earth, and Duy Thu, General Manager of Stone Hill Farm, a leading sustainable cocoa farming system in FabLab's Circularity and Green Development.
🌳 Biochar production and use can offset between 8% and 19% of all greenhouse gas emissions in a 184,830 km² state in the USA. In addition to storing carbon, biochar can increase water retention in the soil. For example, if biochar acts similarly to native organic matter, a 1% increase in soil organic matter could increase water storage by 1.5% to 5%, depending on soil texture. This increase in soil organic matter equates to an extra 200 gallons of water for each 1% increase. (USDA Forest Service)
🗺️ In the context of Vietnam, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) has developed policies to promote organic agriculture, providing a framework for biochar usage and increased demand for inputs for organic fertilizers. There is a growing supply and demand for organic agricultural inputs and mechanisms, offering potential market entry points for biochar as a complementary input for sustainable agriculture. Importantly, biochar has been shown to improve animal health when added to their feed, reduce antibiotic use in animals, and improve pasture quality. (UNIDO)
